Busy-ness

October 16, 2007

It’s been a busy few weeks. I have been working [1]; I’ve been sick [2]; I’ve been doing my best to get this assignment out of the way [3]; and I’ve become disappointed with the silly, waste-of-time show, Australian Idol [4].

1. Work is the same ol’ thing/place/activity.

2. Came down with the flu-type thing. All ok now. Poor PH now has it. I am sure I had something to do with that –my bad.

3.  Went to the library on Sunday and carved away a sizable chunk of the assignment. It’s quite good actually: I really like the topic. I’m heading for a HD for this one… Fingers n’ toes!

4.  Ben got voted out last night. Something I do not understand. As Dicko said, he expected Matt and Ben to be the two to get to the finale. They have the voices; the appeal and the fans!

I’m guessing that people thought they were so much of a sure-thing that they didn’t bother voting and subsequently they were in the bottom three. Alternately, perhaps Ben and Matt’s fan base don’t have the access to vote unlike the fans of more mature acts. For example: perhaps the average B/M fan is on limited, pre-paid mobile access; restricting the amount they can vote?

Anyways…

Bittersweet, cacophony?

October 8, 2007

Well, as promised I shall recap the weekend.

Saturday:-

I pretty much just slept in on Saturday as I had a busy-ish Friday night: work drinks, dinner… In the evening, went to Bot C with 12 of my closest. Then to Bot B, then to MB. Was a great great great great night.

Sunday:-

Spent with wee P. Which was great… As it always is… Received character assassinating SMS from a certain people for a good part of the day.  Made me realise how unreasonable some seemingly intelligent/reasonable people can be.

P

Oh my, it’s been so long since I have written anything here. Oh well, I only know of three regular readers of my ramblings. I just use this to (1) vent; and (2) kill time at work.

Lots has happened in the world of Paul, I shall dot-point:

Work:-

  • I have been here for over two months.
  • Things are getting busier.
  • I have finally submitted the “suggests” I have talked about with a few of you.
  • I have done something that shall remain confidential, keywords: ad firm, The Advertiser, Fringe.

So that’s what’s been going on with work. I have to be a little hush-hush, but feel free to ask. Paul H knows what’s going on…

Uni:-

  • I have deferred from Microeconomics until the next semester it’s offered.
  • I have a Management assignment due this week which I am pretty much finished, woot.
  • I am finding Management pretty boring, albeit very easy.

Uni is going well. It’s already week 5. Not sure what i’ll do next semester. Probably Business Law and Psych1.

Music:-

The best news of the year arrived at my computer screen in the wee hours of this morning: Radiohead’s new album In Rainbows will be available to download in ten-days. In a bold move, Radiohead have chosen to deliver the album as a download from their website for what ever price the buyer nominates. That’s right, you could pay $0.00 or $100.00, or any other amount.

This is a ground breaking move to say the least. They’ve cut-ties with any multinational recording company which gives them the freedom to do as they wish and they understand the role the Internet plays in the music industry and have embraced it. This really stops punters from going out there on the Torrents and P2P sites downloading the album or individual songs and has them going directly to RH’s website and feeling good and loyal about what they are doing. By downloading for free, they are doing nothing wrong.

RH will make a lot of their profits from the “discbox” that will also be released (in Dec). According to Phil Gallo of Variety.com “the discbox includes double vinyl and CD versions of the 10-song “In Rainbows” and a second, enhanced CD with an additional eight songs, artwork and photographs of the band. Anyone purchasing the deluxe edition — price is about $80 — will automatically receive the bundled MP3 album on Oct. 10″.

Anita Roddick: who is she?

September 11, 2007

If I were to ask most people I know, do you know who Anita Roddick is? They’d give me a blank stare and shrug of the shoulders. I was like that until today. Anita Roddick is the founder of Body Shop, the environmentally-friendly, ethical toiletry/beauty/skin-care company. In news today, it was announced today that she had died. I decided to look into her name a little further as I admire the Body Shop. I really enjoy and benefit from their products and remember hearing that they recently got sold to pro-animal-testing firm, L’Oreal.

Well, Anita is quite an admirable woman. I shan’t go on at length (at the moment) but I have been browsing her website all day, and her values, views and commentary is agreeable and inspiring to say the least.

The weekend that was

September 9, 2007

I can’t completely reminisce over the weekend that was as it still is. Well, technically it was as the week begins Sunday, and that’s what today is. So, technically today is the start of a new week yet we’ve come to consider Sunday as part of the weekend. I wonder how that all happened?

Friday I worked, as I do. After work we had work drinks at the Griff which was really fun. Only got there are the tail-end of the “free” drinks so managed to gulp a couple down. Luke was tactful and got two at once. Smart lad is that Luke. Me, I didn’t want to look so alcoholic (HAHA). After the IN drinks went to T/House to meet up with Maria who decided to let me in the building to sit about as she finished work. Well! T management didn’t like that one bit. I was asked to leave immediately. Conflict of interest fears I guess. However, (a) how do they know I still work in the industry; (b) I can extract far more information from Maria or any of the other BP’ers I know than from the posters that adorn their walls; (c) it was after hours, I was slightly intoxicated and didn’t give a shit about any of their information. Anyways…

We first went to The Promethean Theatre for Tony’s birthday drinks. Didn’t really know what to expect. Maria and myself were first to arrive so we got a bottle of red and started on that and then the floodgates opened and all manners of BP people arrived. Heaps of people I haven’t seen in ages. It was so good. I was happy to see them all. Had a good chat with Deb A about her impending exit from the business. She seemed a little disappointed at how difficult it’s going to be for her when she expected to exit similar to the way I did. Oh well, she needs to go to a competitor. Tony and his GF were there; Tas; Len; Ang; Kristy; Peter; Guy… So great.

After The P we went to Electric Light Hotel on Grenfell Street which is a really cool place. They have a killer beer garden: massive. The inside is so well fitted. We stayed there for a short while and Guy wanted to do some hardcore dancing so we shot off to Electric Circus due to my suggestion. There was a bit of a line-up which I tried to skip by speaking to Olly but he spoke to Even who said only I could go through. I didn’t want to leave Maria, Peter and Guy behind so we waited it out… Ended up getting free entry which was a plus. The music was ok. We danced for a fair while. After which, we gota kebab and headed home. I got in at 4:30am… Ended up talking to Paul at 5AA for the trip home. He was laughing over the taxi drivers name: Gewterhasin Singh if I recall? (HAHA).

Slept almost the whole day Saturday. Felt pretty ick. Drank too much on Friday night. Was meant to go to Jamiee’s think at the Belgium but didn’t make it. Admittedly, I did agree to go to Tony’s first but still, I feel a little bad.

Today I have to get into study, hardcore. I am not behind -on management- yet, thankfully. Microec. on the other hand, hmm…

Microeconomics continued…

September 4, 2007

I had a chat to my best pal Ben last night and he’s instilled some enthusiasm in me about microeconomics. He’s studying commerce himself and has completed microeco. admittedly after two attempts (sorry Benny, hehe). At least I’ll have a helping hand if necessary. So far, the content is pretty intense but manageable. I am still on chapter two of my text, reading about the production possibilities curve, opportunity costs etc. The theory is uber-clear and makes sense to me and finally the economic models (graphs) are making sense. I think I’ll ignore the UniSA forum until I have finished week 2′s requirements. Thanks for your support Benny…

On another note, management is going well. Easy as pie (pi). Some of us Rad students are having a “study group” tomorrow which should be nice. It’ll be good to speak it out with other people as the forums are really slow and I am eager for discussion. Grr…

Anyways, I am going to take lunch.
